Lent

Hunger a dull throbbing of
unfulfilled desire, pulsing
Desperation as the will
gives way before the mouth
And guilt smiles full-lipped
self-loathing scouring tears

Power structures built by
self hate and guilt held
together with the lies
that make the world seem sane

Why do they need another one
voices wonder, lost in need
Does God need us to suffer
for no reason; Lent tells us
Yes and the sanctimonious
laugh their mean little smiles
